Huge congratulations on getting a study place, and welcome to MIK! MIK, or the Materials Engineering Guild (Materiaali-insinööri ,kilta), is the student organization for everyone studying materials engineering. The guild will create a community of like-minded people around you, and through the guild, you can find good friends, study help, and companions for sports or hanging out. You’ll become familiar with the guild and its activities throughout the fall! Now is a good time to join the Telegram group designed for all Materials Engineering freshmen through this link: https://t.me/+igADJ-9Fp7k4OGFk (If the link is old you can find the new one from here)
Throughout the summer, the group will share information about various events, as well as details about Orientation Week and its schedule.
During Orientation Week, the guild will organize general info sessions for freshmen, as well as activities to help you get to know other first-year students. There will also be many additional events, and more information about these will be provided closer to the time. If you have any questions at this stage about pretty much anything, don’t hesitate to contact our guild’s “fuksi” (freshman) team! Their contact information can be found below.
The University of Tampere’s website offers a comprehensive guide of tasks to complete during the summer, which you should definitely check out:

Here’s a short checklist of important things to do:

– Start looking for accommodation early.
– Activate your university user account following the instructions you’ve received.
– Apply for student financial aid during the summer.
– Pay the student union membership fee.
– It’s recommended to get familiar with Telegram as well – it’s an app similar to WhatsApp and is widely used among students in Tampere.
– You can also pre-order your student card after August 5th by following the instructions on TREY’s website. This way, you’ll have access to student benefits and a key card during Orientation Week.
– Participate in Orientation Week
If you’re eager to jump into student activities over the summer, our guild is organizing a summer event, where you can come and check out what’s happening among the MIK members! More information about the summer event might be posted in the information channel https://t.me/miktiedotus
The Orientation Week schedule will be published later!
